Over the last week we held our first ever summer school for 8-14 year olds in Kent to come and have a go at learning the different skills involved in samba. Over 5 mornings, the children learnt a mixture of drumming, dancing and craft skills to perform on Saturday in Tunbridge Wells with Bloco Fogo in an exciting and memorable performance.
Bloco Fogo mestre Cheryl, led the drumming workshops teaching everything from basic samba reggae rhythms and techniques to performing as a bateria. Dance tutor Hester, taught the children an exciting combination of afro-reggae and street dance moves whilst Theatre Prop Designer Jemma, guided the children through a series of craft workshops to create some beautiful flags, hats and beads for our performance.
Aided by Bloco Fogo volunteers, the week flew by with the children working hard to create not only some amazing music and dance, but new friendships and skills.
"I've been blown away by the amount of hard work, creativity and concentration the children have put in over the last week, as well as the professionalism all the tutors involved brought to the project. The performance was utterly fantastic, with members of the public dancing and getting caught up in the excitement of the occasion -I'm just so proud of everyone! Who's joining us in 2016?!" -Cheryl
