Jersey Battle of Flowers Day Parade

First staged in 1902 in celebration of a Royal Coronation the Jersey Battle of Flowers has since grown over the past century and more to become one of the largest floral carnivals in Europe and without doubt a major highlight in Jersey’s varied summer calendar of festivals and events.

Bloco Fogo were especially invited to take part for the first time this year and performed alongside 25 floats, dancers, stilt walkers and 4 other bands as part of both the day and moonlight parades. An amazing event with huge capacity crowds lining the main coast road in St Helier.  Copious amounts of streamers and confetti added to the carnival atmosphere as we paraded in front of the very welcoming crowds that cheered and clapped all the way.
Let's hope we are invited back again next year.

Thanks Jersey, it was a blast !

Meninos do Bloco Fogo Samba Summer School

Over the last week we held our first ever summer school for 8-14 year olds in Kent to come and have a go at learning the different skills involved in samba. Over 5 mornings, the children learnt a mixture of drumming, dancing and craft skills to perform on Saturday in Tunbridge Wells with Bloco Fogo in an exciting and memorable performance.
Bloco Fogo mestre Cheryl, led the drumming workshops teaching everything from basic samba reggae rhythms and techniques to performing as a bateria. Dance tutor Hester, taught the children an exciting combination of afro-reggae and street dance moves whilst Theatre Prop Designer Jemma, guided the children through a series of craft workshops to create some beautiful flags, hats and beads for our performance.

Aided by Bloco Fogo volunteers, the week flew by with the children working hard to create not only some amazing music and dance, but new friendships and skills.

"I've been blown away by the amount of hard work, creativity and concentration the children have put in over the last week, as well as the professionalism all the tutors involved brought to the project. The performance was utterly fantastic, with members of the public dancing and getting caught up in the excitement of the occasion -I'm just so proud of everyone! Who's joining us in 2016?!" -Cheryl

Keep your eyes pealed for videos on our page of the performance and rehearsals over the next few weeks, and if you took any photos or videos, don't forget to tag us or use #blocofogosummerschool

There are so many people to thank: Our superstar Meninos: Jess, Matthew, Eryk, Rosie and Amelie; Tutors and Volunteers: Hester, Jemma, Jackie, Tracy, Lily, Jon, Hannah and Ruby; St Matthew's Primary School, High Brooms for hosting us, Eurotalk for their Brazilian language worksheet, Nuffield Health for sharing the performance space with us on Saturday.

New Romney Country Fayre

Back again for about the ninth time at the New Romney Country Fayre, one of the favourites on our calendar. A fabulous parade through the streets of New Romney up to St Martin's Field where the crowds were waiting.  Over 150 stalls kept everyone busy and a variety of performances in the two arenas, including birds of prey, clowns, marching bands, dance groups, a horse display and of course Bloco Fogo kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon.

New Romney - We'll see you next year !
