For over twenty years, Burning the Clocks has held a cherished place in Brighton’s calendar. Held annually on the winter solstice, December 21st, this magical event lights up the city with a glowing parade of handmade lanterns and a vibrant procession of 2,000 participants.
As the parade winds its way to the beach, participants release their lanterns – filled with personal hopes and dreams – into a blazing bonfire, paving the way for a breath-taking fire show and fireworks display.
Taking place on the longest night of the year, this unique tradition symbolizes the passage of time, “burning the clocks” to welcome the new sun. With over 20,000 spectators, the event shines a light on the festive season’s creative spirit, moving away from the commercial aspects of Christmas and embracing the warmth of community.
Founded by Same Sky in 1994, Burning the Clocks offers a space for everyone in the community to celebrate the season, regardless of faith or background. Each year, a new theme inspired by time brings fresh energy to the event. This year’s theme, Voyager, will guide the celebration.
Same Sky also conducts free lantern-making workshops for local groups, including homeless youth, single fathers, and young carers. These workshops encourage creativity and pride, connecting participants through the shared joy of art and community.
Bloco Fogo are super excited to be joining them again this year! 🏮
